Process

Unlike an incubator or accelerator which works on other people’s ideas, BVS is a “studio” which means that we are focusing on our own ideas.

The core strengths of BVS are consumer product design and prototyping, and recruiting co-founders.

BVS will probably work on 10-20 new company ideas each year. We expect 2-3 of these to make it to become their own spun-off companies each year.

To make it to this point, each new idea at BVS needs three things:

  1. A CEO/Cofounder. This is someone who has a track record with consumer tech, hiring, marketing, PR, social media, etc. Paul English will spend significant time recruiting CEO candidates for each of our companies, and these CEOs will become true cofounders of each idea we pursue.

  2. Market validation. We will have a product design — and often a prototype — and use this to validate the basic idea. We also look at TAM and competitors, and we consult with industry experts.

  3. Investor interest. We already have relationships with about a dozen VC firms, and we expect one or more of these to invest in each idea that gets launched.

We write everything in Google docs with heavy collaboration/commenting, we use Figma for design, we use Zoom (trying to keep regular meetings limited to happen only within 2-5pm each day), and we’re heavy users of email. The dev teams also use slack.

We are fully remote right now, with plans to meet for a team lunch or dinner once a week! Over time, we’ll re-evaluate this situation and possibly open a Boston office at some point. (But if we do that, we’ll give each team member 100% flexibility as to when and if they want to be in the office.)
